“Through stories of endangered and vulnerable species in Pakistan, my thesis titled “امانت (Amaanat)” emphasizes the interconnectedness of nature and culture and how both are equally at risk of being forgotten or neglected. This collection of work addresses human negligence towards nature and all that is lost when ecosystems, traditions, and cultural memories are no longer safeguarded. The artworks are rooted in the Islamic and cultural concept of “amaanat,” the idea of stewardship and sacred duty, where nature and culture are blessings from God, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, entrusted to humans who must protect and care for them.Drawing inspiration from the iconic landscapes of Pakistan, native endangered and vulnerable wildlife, and traditional crafts such as clothing and embroidery, “امانت (Amaanat)” considers fragility and the urgent need to protect what is vulnerable before it disappears forever.”

Samreen Malik (b. 2004, Toronto) is an emerging artist based in the GTA. She works with various media, including digital and traditional drawing, as well as acrylic and watercolour painting. Her work explores themes of cultural identity, family, tradition, and memory as she navigates her place in the diaspora as a Canadian-born Pakistani. Samreen’s technique, practice, and overall art style draw significant inspiration from nostalgic pop culture and media, especially animated films and Japanese anime and manga, which she has enjoyed since childhood. Through her work, Samreen aims to challenge negative stereotypes surrounding her Muslim and Pakistani heritage, inspire others to appreciate their backgrounds and histories, and deepen her own understanding and appreciation of her identity and culture.Additionally, Samreen runs a small business as a freelance artist and illustrator, selling her artwork as merchandise such as prints and stickers at in-person events, as well as digital commissions.
