“What defines a place? Is it architecture, geography, or the accumulation of lived experiences? “Scarborough: Places That Hold Us” is a collection of everyday regions, using miniature environments and recorded voices to explore memory, routine, and belonging at a human scale. The project takes the form of a projection-mapped installation, combining hand-built dioramas with animated visuals and audio recordings tied to specific locations across Scarborough. Each region is represented by a miniature sculptural prop, such as transit stations, parks, and public spaces that are accompanied by an animation projected onto a wooden map of Scarborough.

Elise Antoinette Nopuente, also known as Miscel, is a Scarborough-based Filipino-Canadian artist specializing in Experimental Animation. Her work focuses on storytelling that explores memory, identity, and emotional experiences through a combination of physical and digital media. Her practice often integrates hand-crafted materials, stylized visuals, and animation to create intimate human-scale narratives. Drawing from personal experience and everyday environments, her work focuses on the subtle ways that place and routine shape a sense of belonging. She is particularly interested in the intersection of tactile, handmade processes and digital animation, using this contrast to explore themes of memory, perception, and transformation. Her current thesis project explores the relationship between physical and digital processes, often combining hand-crafted elements with animation to create intimate human-scale narratives. This project combines miniature sculptural environments with projection mapping and recorded voices to examine Scarborough as a collection of lived experiences rather than a singular location. Through this work, she aims to create emotionally resonant installations that invite reflection on the spaces we move through everyday.
