Material Art and Design (MAAD)

“My work explores the relationship between maker and creation, valuing the process as deeply as the final form. At its core, my practice is rooted in the human experience of making. Each decision, adjustment, and refinement leaves a trace, shaping not only the object but the person behind it. Through textiles and metalworking, I embed each piece with layered emotional and conceptual meaning. I create immersive works that tell stories and invite an emotional response, by grounding the work in principles of empirical aesthetics. Meticulous attention to detail guides every stage of my practice. I am interested in the interplay between the logic of beauty and the emotions objects can carry. My work is centred on designing pieces of endearment, objects that viewers can connect with, inhabit, and use in meaningful, everyday ways. My practice is also a reflection of myself: continually evolving, edited, and refined over time. I value this ongoing process of revision, as it not only strengthens the work but shapes me into a more thoughtful and intentional designer. Ultimately, I am drawn to transforming bodies and spaces into something enduring, intimate, and beautiful. ”

Hello, my name is Madison Pickers. I am an emerging designer and artist based in Toronto, completing an Honours Bachelor of Design (BDES) at OCAD University. Working across disciplines within the Material Art & Design program, my practice integrates textiles and metalworking to create thoughtfully crafted, emotionally resonant objects. My work is grounded in an exploration of empirical aesthetics and the relationship between maker and creation, combining technical precision with a deep sensitivity to material and process. Through a cross-disciplinary approach, I create pieces that invite connection, transforming everyday interactions into meaningful and everlasting experience.
