Drawing and Painting

“My body of work explores the Igbo concept of time through a four-painting installation that moves through stages of decolonization, progressing from pre-colonial understandings of time, to colonial disruption, resistance, and a re-centering of Igbo knowledge as a complete and self-sustaining framework. Despite growing up in Nigeria, I was never taught about this system of knowledge, even as an Igbo person. With English as my first language, European knowledge was prioritized within the education system, often overshadowing Indigenous ways of knowing. This body of work seeks to educate and create space for reflection on original Igbo temporal frameworks, while also considering what it means to reclaim cultural sovereignty. My oil painting process involves building layers of colour and pattern to produce visually compelling compositions. This approach reflects the material and process-based qualities of West African textile production. Recurring motifs such as circles, spirals, curved lines, and polka dots represent the spiralic flow of time understood by the Igbo people of Nigeria. Together, the works aim to make visible knowledge systems that have historically been displaced, while affirming their relevance in the present.”

Chimemelie Okafor (b. 2003) is a Nigerian multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Toronto. She is completing a BFA in Drawing and Painting at OCAD University. Working primarily with oil paint, she also explores drawing and collage. Her practice is rooted in storytelling, using colour, patterns, and surreal imagery to explore the complexity of the human experience through her own lens. Her body and face appear as recurring elements throughout her work, accompanied by gestural play which captures the shifting states of being. She believes that everyone holds multiple identities at once, shaped not only by where they’ve been and how they feel in a given moment, but also by those who came before them.
