“I want to build community;I have always known I wanted to be an artist, my whole life I have loved to create, play-not just have fun, but nurture my soul by making art. For a moment, when I started university, I got caught up in the idea that there was one way to be an artist; that I needed to fit a certain standard, conform to a certain way of making and marketing in order to have a career as an artist. I took a year off and came back to complete my final year, and I had the realization that I have never once let myself succumb to someone else's standards; I’ve never let someone dictate the expression of my identity. My art is an extension of myself, it is not separate to me, it’s an expression of my soul. So to that, why in the world would I restrict my art to someone else's standards. If I do not fit in the box that is already there, I will make my own box and invite all my friends. I want to build community with my art, I want to create a space of connection and creation, I want to help people feel safe and at home. ”

Robbie Simpson is a Transgender multidisciplinary artist. His immersive work explores domestic space, identity, hope and nostalgia. Using play as a methodology, he experiments with found objects, second hand fabric, and household recyclables. Simpson’s work is not complete without community interaction; his spaces aim to forge connection, constructed from materials second hand from the community, for the community.
