Drawing and Painting

“Serrano’s focus is primarily on psychological restorative and destructive elements of painting through abstract and surreal concepts in nature-inspired work. In addition to painting, she plays with ideas of mental health in figurative work inspired by photography and choreography. Mainly, her interests involve the relationship between mental health and spiritual symbolism, and how that can be represented through visual techniques and composition in her emotionally charged art. Therefore, she aims to evoke similar emotions from the viewer through technical effects from complex spaces, the use of saturated colors, and subtle depictions of form. She seeks to give the opportunity to reclaim one’s mental power over expectations of visual arts and society, by utilizing unconventional methods, energized imitations of nature, and intuitive, abstracted automatic art.

Sam Serrano is a visual artist based in Toronto and OCAD University 2020 graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art. Though born in the suburbs, her art practice developed gradually during her time in the city, displaying some pieces at exhibitions such as OCADU's Advanced Studio Show, Pop Down, and at Propeller Gallery’s Online 2020 GradEx show. Her work addresses spiritual and mental health concepts in abstract painting, landscapes, and figurative drawing. She further expands these compositions through an exploration of materials and intuitive based processes. In the future, she hopes to discover functional aspects of painting, while retaining her roots in abstraction and also dive into digital media.
