Drawing and Painting

“I make paintings for the moment before recognition, when form is felt before it is fixed. In oil, images gather through glazing, abrasion, concealment, and revision, holding shells, seeds, vessels, currents, bodies, and landscapes in flux. My thesis body of work, Threshold, locates clarity elsewhere: in pressure, relation, duration, and sustained looking.”

Veronika Bondarenko is a Toronto-based painter completing her BFA in Drawing & Painting at OCAD University. Working primarily in oil on canvas, she builds layered, chromatically charged surfaces through glazing, abrasion, concealment, and revision. Her thesis body of work, Threshold, develops abstraction as a material and perceptual language for atmosphere, embodiment, psychology, and symbolic structure. Across the paintings, forms hover between shell, seed, vessel, current, body, landscape, diagram, and interior space, remaining open without becoming vague.Drawing on pattern systems, Ukrainian cosmology, phenomenology, and studio research, Bondarenko treats ambiguity as a precise material condition. Her work locates clarity in relation, duration, surface, and embodied looking.
